For decades, one rhythm defined futures trading: markets close Friday afternoon, the world keeps happening, and everything reprices at the Sunday open. In 2026 CME Group started dismantling that rhythm. Bitcoin futures went 24/7 in May. Gold followed on July 26, 2026. A new, smaller crude oil contract arrived at the end of August. Equity index futures, including ES and NQ, still close for the weekend. The obvious question is how long that lasts.
The timeline
- October 2025: CME announced that crypto futures and options would move to 24/7 trading in early 2026, subject to regulatory review (CoinDesk).
- February 19, 2026: CME set May 29 as the launch date.
- May 29, 2026: 24/7 crypto futures and options went live on Globex, with a two-hour maintenance pause from 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. UTC on Saturdays. CME's June 1 release said more than 7,200 contracts, about $50 million notional, traded in the first weekend. CoinDesk framed it as the end of bitcoin's famous "CME gaps" (May 28).
- July 26, 2026: 24/7 trading began for 1-Ounce Gold futures. CME's July 27 release was headlined "Traders Drive Strong Demand in First Weekend of CME Group's 24/7 Gold Futures."
- August 30, 2026: a new, smaller-sized crude oil contract launched as part of the 24/7 expansion, as reported in coverage of CME's plan to expand 24/7 trading for WTI crude oil and gold.
Where equity index futures stand
CME's equity index futures trade nearly 24 hours a day, five days a week, not 24/7, per CME's equity products pages. Even the newest retail product, E-nano index futures launched August 24, trades "nearly 23 hours per day," per CME's announcement. We found no CME announcement of 24/7 trading for ES, NQ or their micros.
But competitors are not waiting. Coinbase Derivatives lists perpetual-style equity index futures, including an S&P 500 product launched August 17, that trade around the clock. That means weekend price discovery for US stock indexes now exists on a CFTC-regulated venue, just not at CME.
Why it matters for NQ traders
- Sunday gaps. NQ traders know the Sunday-open gap well. A 24/7 NQ would replace gaps with continuous weekend trading, which changes gap-fill strategies entirely.
- Risk management. Continuous trading lets you exit on weekend news, but it also means stops can trigger at 3 a.m. on a Sunday in a thin book.
- Prop and broker rules. Many firms have rules built around the weekly close. 24/7 products force them to rethink holding and margin policies.
- Liquidity split. Weekend sessions are likely to be thinner. The first crypto weekend was about $50 million notional, tiny next to typical weekday index futures activity.
Both sides
For 24/7: news doesn't stop on Friday, so markets shouldn't either. Traders get a regulated venue to react instead of watching offshore prices or CFDs. CME keeps volume that might otherwise go to always-on competitors.
Against: equity index futures hedge a cash market that is closed on weekends, so weekend prices would be based on sentiment rather than underlying trading. Thin books invite volatility spikes, and operations teams at brokers and clearing firms never get a pause.
Our take
Opinion: CME is moving asset class by asset class, starting where demand for weekend trading is most obvious: crypto, then gold and oil, which react to geopolitical weekend news. Equity index futures are the crown jewel and the hardest case, because the underlying stocks don't trade. But with perps on a regulated rival trading the S&P 500 all weekend, the pressure is real. Our guess is that CME will face a choice between letting weekend index price discovery happen elsewhere or bringing it in-house. Traders should start preparing for either.
What traders can do
- If you trade gold or crypto futures, check how your broker handles weekend margin and stops.
- Review any strategy that depends on Sunday-open gaps; its edge may shrink if weekend trading spreads.
- Watch weekend prices on 24/7 venues as a sentiment read before the CME equity open.
Key takeaways
- CME crypto futures went 24/7 on May 29, 2026; gold on July 26; a smaller crude contract on Aug 30.
- The first 24/7 crypto weekend traded over 7,200 contracts, about $50 million notional.
- ES and NQ remain nearly 24/5, with no 24/7 announcement found.
- Regulated weekend index trading already exists at Coinbase Derivatives.
