The second day of big-bank earnings season, Wednesday, October 14, 2026, delivered three very different stories before the open. Bank of America reported a sharp drop in profit after booking a $1.2 billion regulatory settlement charge. Morgan Stanley beat on both earnings and revenue, led by equities trading. BlackRock, reporting the same morning, said assets under management reached $15.5 trillion after $205 billion of quarterly net inflows.
Together with Tuesday's split card from JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo, the week's bank tape is now clear: wealth and equities trading are carrying the firms that lean that way, while fixed income, investment banking fees and one-off charges are punishing everyone else.
Bank of America: $0.91 EPS after a $1.2 billion settlement
Bank of America reported third-quarter net income of $6.9 billion, or $0.91 per diluted share, down from $8.3 billion, or $1.04, a year earlier, according to its earnings release filed with the SEC. Revenue, net of interest expense, rose 3% to $30.0 billion. Net interest income climbed 8% to $16.4 billion ($16.6 billion on a fully taxable-equivalent basis), and the net interest yield rose 15 basis points to 2.16%.
The headline numbers were dominated by a non-tax-deductible regulatory settlement charge of $1.2 billion, or $0.17 per share. On October 13, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and FinCEN announced consent orders tied to Bank Secrecy Act, anti-money laundering and economic-sanctions programs. Excluding that charge, Bank of America said adjusted net income was $8.1 billion and adjusted EPS was $1.08. Even on that basis, several Street compilations still showed a miss: MT Newswires cited a FactSet consensus near $1.10, and Benzinga put the adjusted consensus near $1.11. Revenue also missed estimates around $30.6 billion.
Trading was soft. Sales and trading revenue fell 5% to $5.1 billion, with FICC down 17% to $2.6 billion and equities up 11% to $2.5 billion. Investment banking fees for the corporation (excluding self-led deals) were $1.8 billion, down 11%. Consumer and wealth held up better: consumer banking revenue rose 4% to $11.6 billion, card spend rose 8% to $266 billion, and Global Wealth and Investment Management revenue jumped 13% to $7.1 billion on higher asset-management fees. The bank returned $8.3 billion to shareholders, including $6.0 billion of buybacks, and reported a CET1 ratio of 10.9%.
The stock reaction was harsh. CNBC and Yahoo Finance both described a multi-percent premarket drop, with Yahoo calling it on track for the bank's worst post-earnings day since March 2020. CEO Brian Moynihan pointed to organic growth in deposits, wealth flows and consumer activity even as capital-markets revenue cooled.
Morgan Stanley: equities trading clears the bar
Morgan Stanley was the day's clear bank winner. Net income rose 6.5% to $4.91 billion, or $3.03 per diluted share, on revenue of $20.34 billion, up 12%, Quartz reported, citing company figures. That beat CNBC-cited estimates of $2.91 EPS and $19.95 billion of revenue, and also cleared a Benzinga consensus of $2.92 EPS and $19.954 billion of sales.
Equities did the heavy lifting. Newsquawk and market summaries circulating on X put equity sales and trading revenue at $5.80 billion, well above an expected $4.90 billion, while FICC of about $2.01 billion missed a $2.22 billion estimate. Wealth management revenue was about $9.07 billion, near expectations, with record client assets near $10.5 trillion and strong net new assets in the firm's wealth franchise, according to those same summaries. The pattern rhymes with Goldman's Tuesday print: clients are active in equities and wealth, not in fixed income.
BlackRock: $15.5 trillion AUM and $205 billion of inflows
BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, reported diluted EPS of $10.57, or $15.93 as adjusted, and said AUM reached $15.5 trillion after $205 billion of net inflows in the quarter and $869 billion over the trailing twelve months, per its press release. Revenue rose 19% year over year. TipRanks and other recaps put quarterly revenue near $7.75 billion, with technology services and subscription revenue up 14%, driven by Aladdin. TickerGrove said the adjusted EPS figure beat Street clusters around $14.24 to $14.33, and that shares rose about 3% premarket.
The inflows mix mattered for how investors read "risk-on." BlackRock said the quarter reflected strength across iShares ETFs, systematic active equities, private markets and cash, with about $135 billion into ETFs and $66 billion into active strategies in Bloomberg and company-linked coverage. That is a different tape from Bank of America's trading miss: money is still flowing into managed products even as bank trading desks digest higher rates and quieter deal calendars.
What the second day of bank week is telling us
- One-off charges still move the stock. Bank of America's fine was disclosed Tuesday and booked in the quarter; adjusted EPS near $1.08 still was not enough for the Street.
- Equities trading remains the bright spot. Morgan Stanley's $5.8 billion equities line and Goldman's 72% equities jump on Tuesday show clients are repositioning, not sitting out.
- Wealth and AUM flows are resilient. BofA's GWIM, Morgan Stanley's wealth franchise and BlackRock's $205 billion of inflows all point to fee businesses holding up better than FICC and investment banking.
- NII is still a tailwind where loan growth is real. Bank of America's 8% NII increase and higher yield sit alongside JPMorgan's raised NII outlook from Tuesday.
Where Loomi fits
Bank and asset-manager prints land before the open, so the first reaction is in premarket prices and options. Loomi's options scanner surfaces unusual call and put activity in names like BAC, MS and BLK as the numbers hit, and the GEX regime view shows whether dealer gamma is likely to damp or amplify the index move after the open. If you trade with rules rather than headlines, Loomi's automated strategies publish their logic, and each has a reproducibility certificate so you can see how it behaved through past earnings weeks.
What's next
Wednesday's session still had to digest the September consumer price index, released at 8:30 a.m. ET. Taiwan Semiconductor reports Thursday, and more financials and industrials fill out the rest of the week. FAQ
Why did Bank of America earnings fall in Q3 2026?
Reported net income fell to $6.9 billion, or $0.91 per share, largely because the bank booked a $1.2 billion non-tax-deductible regulatory settlement charge ($0.17 per share) tied to BSA/AML and sanctions consent orders. Adjusted EPS was $1.08, and revenue of $30.0 billion also missed some Street estimates.
Did Morgan Stanley beat Q3 2026 earnings estimates?
Yes. Morgan Stanley earned $3.03 per share on $20.34 billion of revenue, beating CNBC-cited estimates of about $2.91 and $19.95 billion. Equities trading revenue near $5.80 billion was a key driver.
How large are BlackRock's assets after Q3 2026?
BlackRock reported $15.5 trillion of AUM after $205 billion of net inflows in the quarter and $869 billion over the trailing twelve months, with revenue up 19% year over year.
